Opinion | Why on earth does Pelosi support the Trumpists?

The Democratic Party acts recklessly and unpatriotically. So far Democrats have spent tens of millions to help Trumpist candidates in Republican primary.

In Illinois alone, the Democratic Governors Association and the Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker spent at least $ 30 million attacking a Trumpist’s moderate gubernatorial opponent. In Pennsylvania, a Democratic campaign has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertisements intended to help a Trumpist candidate win the GOP gubernatorial primary. A political action committee attached to Nancy Pelosi has been working to boost far-right Republican House candidates in California and Colorado.

They do this because they think far-right Trumpist candidates will be easier to beat in the general election than more moderate candidates.

What the Democrats are doing is sly in the best of circumstances. If you love your country more than your party, you should want the best candidates to progress in any of the parties. And in these circumstances, it’s crazy what they’re doing: the far-right candidates who support the Democrats can easily win.

Many Democrats, who live in their own information bubble and have apparently learned nothing since 2016, apparently do not understand the awful election landscape they are facing. They do not seem to understand how much their business-as-usual approach could lead to a full Republican takeover in 2025 – which, as this week’s uprising hearing on January 6 reminded us again, is a disaster for our democracy. would be.

Many Democrats hope the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision will mobilize their voters for the coming midterm, and it looks like that has happened, at least in the short term. But I am convinced that this election is mainly about the economy and the existential state of the country. Things look extremely grim to the ruling party.

A staggering 83 percent of Americans believe the economy is weak or not as good, according to a May Wall Street Journal-NORC poll. And an equally astonishing 83 percent of Americans are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the country, according to a Gallup poll.

Parties are punished when they make mistakes. Recently, Democrats made the kind of mistakes that make voters angry.

Liberal economists have underestimated the inflation threat, and Democratic fiscal policy, which ignores that threat, seems to be escalating. The Democratic Party as a whole has become associated with progressives who have seen policing merely through a racial injustice lens. It is an important lens, but progressive people ignored the public safety lens and were unprepared for the widespread public anger over the increase in crime.

Similarly, many progressives have argued that cancellation culture is not a thing or that it is seriously exaggerated. Americans who are afraid to think out loud think the left has become too censored, and the Democratic Party is once again being blamed by association. Progressives have also largely failed to address the shortcomings of their management model. The great inequality, homelessness, and other social evils plaguing San Francisco and other cities are there for all to see.

We live in an era of threat, an era when people feel insecure in a variety of areas. These are ages when voters tend to flock to conservative parties, associating them with law and order.

And then there is the underlying problem, which has been unaddressed ever since Donald Trump achieved his unexpected victory in 2016, which means that while Democrats support many popular policies, progressives are associated with a range of social and cultural values that are unpopular with most Americans. According to a new More in Common survey, 69 percent of Americans believe that America is a country where you can do anything if you get a good education, develop your talents and are open to innovation. Only 36 percent of progressive activists agree with this.

This is just a basic difference in how people see the country, and time and time again Democratic politicians have been punished for the messages coming from progressive educational and cultural institutions.

The Republican Party has grown quite extremely over the past few years. But it is important to remember that Americans believe that the Democratic Party has also become extreme. According to a CNN poll, 46 percent of Americans believe the GOP is “too extreme” and 48 percent believe the Democratic Party is “too extreme.” My guess is that this is not about Democratic domestic policy, of which many are popular, but about progressive cultural and social views. It’s about people who feel alienated from metropolitan elites.

I’ve had a recurring mystery for the past six years: How is it possible that Democrats are not crushing these guys? The IDP has worked full time over these years to bring itself to shame. And yet, experts expect Republicans to easily recapture the House and perhaps the Senate. It’s quite wonderful when you stop to think about it.

And it’s going to get catastrophically worse for Democrats if the economy deteriorates further and comes as a recession.

In 2020, Biden was the candidate who was apparently not nominated to the coastal elite. But Democrats are still battered because of that association. And what are they doing to solve the problem? Spend money to support Trumpists.

Those fools can run the country in a few years.
