A Garda investigation is underway following an attack on several surveyors and security personnel who were investigating a site proposed to house Ukrainian refugees in Carlow.
a man was hospitalized as a result of the incident at the site proposed for quick-build modular homes for refugees fleeing the Russian invasion.
Four men attacked several surveyors and security personnel on behalf of the Office of Public Works (OPW) in a field at the back of Carrigbrook Estate and Willow Park, just off Tullow Road, on Monday.
The men who were attacked were forced to run out of the area and flee in their cars. One of the men required medical treatment after being hit on the head with a stone.
Three vehicles were damaged by stones thrown at them and by one of the attackers armed with a metal pole.
Gardaí confirmed they are investigating the incident where a man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“Gardaí attended an assault incident that occurred on Monday, March 13, 2023 at approximately 11:00 a.m. at Tullow Road, Carlow, Co Carlow,” a spokesman said.
“A man in his 30s was taken to St Luke’s General Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries sustained as a result of this incident.”
“No arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing,” the spokesperson added.
In a statement, the Ministry of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth said: “The ministry is aware of an incident that took place in Carlow at the proposed site of quick-build homes for those fleeing the war in Ukraine. This matter is being handled by the competent authorities.”
Since then, two protests and support for the proposed modular homes have been held in the town of Carlow. A Carlow Says No protest organized by a group called Éire New opposed the development, while the Carlow For All group organized a rally in solidarity with refugees.
