Patient still critical after Friday’s fiery crash on SH2 near Wellington

Two days after a fiery crash near Wellington in the early hours of Friday, two more people are still hospitalized, one of them in critical condition at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland.

A Counties Manukau Health spokesman confirmed the patient was in a critical but stable condition late Sunday after being transferred from Hutt Hospital Friday night.

The patient was one of three people in a car that caught fire after hitting a utility pole on State Highway 2 between Ngāūranga and Petone around 4:15 am.

Another patient remained in a stable condition in a ward at Hutt Hospital, a spokesman for the Capital & Coast District Health Board confirmed Sunday.

A third person was released from hospital on Saturday evening.

The crash and ensuing fire destroyed power lines and closed both northbound lanes of the highway.

The cause of the accident is being investigated by the Major Accident Police Service.

A patient giveaway page at Middlemore Hospital raised more than $4,000 on Sunday afternoon.
