Paul Scholes insists there is something ‘not quite right’ with Jordan Henderson’s situation at Liverpool, suggesting the captain may have had a falling out with Jurgen Klopp.
Henderson has started nine of Liverpool’s 15 games this season but was back with the subs for Saturday’s defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
That loss puts Liverpool seventh in the Premier League, five points behind fourth place Chelsea and 11 adrift of leaders Arsenal.
While Klopp has been tinkering with his formation this season, his decision to drop his captain has led former United star Scholes to question the relationship between the two.
“He’s got Jordan Henderson on the bench, he should be playing,” Scholes told Premier League Productions.
“He is the leader of the team. He is the captain and the one, the Casemiro type role, and he puts everyone to work.
“It appears to have fallen with him or to bear an injury. Something isn’t right there.’
Liverpool appeared to have put their shaky start to the season behind them with wins over Manchester City last week and West Ham on Wednesday, but slipped again at the City Ground.
Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk were among those who wasted opportunities when Klopp said to BT Sport after the game: “I’ve never seen a game where a team isn’t sure if there are four or five that don’t have the imaginations of a certain piece where it should, should finish it off.
“We were perfectly prepared for that because of the way we defended.
“We always had a free player, I don’t know Bobby in the first half, Virgil twice, three times, I’m not sure if they have to stop the game to be 100% fair.
“Nobody defended Bobby in these moments, nobody defended Virgil in these moments when we were just free. But we didn’t use it, if we all use it then you ask a different question.’
