OPINION: Local fans of the critically acclaimed British gangster drama Peaky Blinders are furious and confused at the current unavailability of the sixth and final season of their beloved show — and rightly so.

Despite its highly publicized arrival on Netflix in many other countries around the world on June 10, it has not appeared on the global streaming service here.

To make matters worse, while the six-episode finale aired weekly in March and April (just a few days behind the original UK broadcast dates) on Sky channel UKTV (with episodes also available on Sky Go), they’ve since disappeared. from those platforms.

We wondered if that was a result of Sky’s first-run deal with UKTV, so we approached them. However, they thought they’d seen it headed to Netflix and confirmed there were no plans for it to appear on the company’s own streaming service — at least in the coming month.

Which, in the absence of another obvious home (Netflix has pretty much nailed the rights for the past five seasons all over the world, including New Zealand), forced frustrated fans to either buy the DVD/Blu-Ray, or looking for “alternative” viewing (a phenomenon they’re not alone in, they’re just asking long-suffering addicts of The Good Fight still waiting for Amazon Prime Video to get past 2019 season 3) .

It’s a crazy situation for one of television’s most popular and sought-after shows, especially when those who have followed the story and characters since its inception in 2013 are desperate for the ultimate fate of Cillian Murphy and his friends’ Tommy Shelby. family and enemies.

If the mingling continues for much longer, we may need to enlist the help of the early season Kiwi star to “keep a quiet word.” As Chief Inspector (the late Major) Chester Campbell, Sam Neill displayed a ruthlessness and an ability to hold a grudge that would be perfect for achieving the result Peaky fans want – right now!

The first five seasons of Peaky Blinders are now available to stream on Netflix. We will continue to look for answers in season six.
