A person is in critical condition after an incident near a problem area in central Wellington early Sunday morning, just hours after another life-threatening incident at a Christchurch bar.

Emergency services were called to the corner of Taranaki and Dixon St at 4 a.m. due to reports of disorder among a group of people, police said.

One person has been taken to hospital with critical injuries.

Three men, aged 21, 23 and 28, have been accused of fighting in a public place.

They were due to appear in court on Monday.

The scene is a stone’s throw from Te Aro Park, an area that attracted so much crime it was one of the locations that inspired the Wellington City Council, police and other agencies to de Wellington Promise in 2021 – an initiative to improve safety through measures such as lighting, Laneway improvements and a new community hub.

The municipality is currently installing a wooden walkway along Dixon St as part of the Pōneke Promise in hopes of reducing antisocial behavior by creating better sightlines, accessibility and space for outdoor dining.

In a single incident, a person is in critical condition after a attack on a bar in Christchurch in the early hours of Sunday.

A police spokesman said they received a call around 1am about a report of an attack at a bar in Hereford St.

The assailant had fled when police arrived and has not yet been found, police said.
