Perth Tory leadership chases CHAOS as protesters throw eggs at supporters | UK | News

Independence supporters and protesters gathered outside the Perth Concert Hall in Perth, Scotland, and expelled the Tory membership that arrived there. Some are said to have thrown eggs at members waiting to get in.

About 350 protesters waving pro-independence flags and anti-Tory banners gathered outside the concert hall.

An eyewitness told the Scottish Daily Express: “The atmosphere and protesters are very lively and are constantly shouting Tory scum.

“Eggs are being thrown at people entering the room and at various journalists. There is a significant police presence (which is no surprise given the way the looting has been received).”

Video footage outside the event showed police stepping between protesters and those attempting to enter the venue.

Signs at the protest read “Tory Scum Out”, “Liz Truss is af***y” and “independence now”.

The logo of the ultra-nationalist group Siol nan Gaidheal was also spotted at the event. Its members were banned from the SNP in 1982 after claims by the late SNP leader Gordon Wilson that they were “proto-fascist”.

Scottish Conservatives disagreed with the protests and hit back on Twitter. Andrew Bowie MP for West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine rejected what he called “Nicola Sturgeon’s nationalism”.

He said: “Eggs are being thrown, spitting at retirees. The good old ‘tory scum’ banner out… Good to see Nicola Sturgeon’s bourgeois and merry nationalism in action tonight in Perth.”

Conservative councilor Ian Gall also protested the protester’s “personal attacks”.

He said: “Perth Hustings, I’m a Tory councillor, have no criminal record, help run a 100 year old family business, start two businesses that have become successful in their own right, pay significant taxes, what exactly makes me scum? This is a hate-filled personal attack on any Tory.”

One protester told the Daily Record: “I am here to ask for support for the many Scots who face a winter without being able to afford heating.

“The governments of Scotland and the United Kingdom must do everything they can to support the most vulnerable in the cost of living.

“Both Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have evaded the topic thus far – it’s time they spoke up.”

The news comes as both candidates claimed they would increase scrutiny of the Scottish government if elected.

Mrs Truss, earlier this week, labeled Nicola Sturgeon an “attention-seeker” in a row with the Scottish Prime Minister.
