Philippe Coutinho owes Steven Gerrard an apology after his performances for Aston Villa this season, according to Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Gerrard was immediately sacked after Villa’s 3-0 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage on Thursday night, after a run of just two wins from 11 Premier League games this season.

Coutinho, meanwhile, joined Villa in January and immediately impressed Gerrard, who played an influential role in his decision to move from Barcelona.

But the Brazilian’s form has faded this season and he has no goals or assists after Villa finalized his £17million move from Barcelona in May.

“Coutinho was his man and he didn’t act for him,” Agbonlahor . said talkSPORT.

“Coutinho owes Gerrard an apology for the way he performed, Gerrard supported him.”

Agbonlahor also believes Gerrard’s tactical decisions contributed to his departure from Villa.

“The formation didn’t work, he wanted the fullbacks to have the width, but it didn’t work. He [Gerrard]got rid of all the wingers, and that annoyed the fans a bit,” said Agbonlahor.

“We became predictable and boring and with too many balls in the penalty area where the attackers were not going to head.

“The tactics were bad and it was only a matter of time. Aston Villa wants to penetrate Europe, not fight against relegation.’
