planetarium labs has raised $32 million from a Series A funding round led by Animoca brands† Krust Universe, WeMade and Samsung Next also joined the funding in hopes of laying the groundwork for a generation of community-driven and governed web3 spell.

Planetarium Labs aims to be a pioneer of open-source, decentralized blockchain games. The company is building a gaming ecosystem based on Libplanet blockchain technology. The purpose of the choice is to allow players to participate in the game network and provide the opportunity to play a major role in the development of open source content.

libplanet is already home to Nine Chronicles, an open-source online RPG that runs entirely on the blockchain. Animoca Brands is also one of Nine Chronicles’ supporters in addition to leading the Planetarium Labs funding round. Animoca Brands is diving into many ponds these days. The Hong Kong-based software company can be found everywhere these days. In addition to Nine Chronicles, it has plenty of big brands in its portfolio, including Disney, the WWE, and The Walking Dead.

“We are convinced that the future will be vast decentralized worlds in an open metaverse,” Animoca Brands’ Yat Siu said in a statement to GamesBeat. “That’s why we’re excited to support Planetarium Labs’ vision of community-centric blockchain games that give players creative freedom and full digital rights.”

Multiple game studios from the Asia-Pacific region are partnering with Planetarium Labs to track the success of Nine Chronicles. They are preparing to launch multiple community-driven game initiatives this year.

It’s a joint effort

The multi-studio team-up is part of a larger, expanded collaboration for Planetarium Labs across Asia. Other members of the new network include Krust Universe, the investment arm of South Korea’s Kakao, and game publisher WeMade.

In addition to the successful completion of the financing round, working on tools is the first steps for Planetarium Labs. The company will allocate the funds to build foundational tools for community-driven gaming and player management. The tools will also enable key studios to deliver increasingly sophisticated Web3 experiences.

The company plans to focus on continuously improving the Libplanet ecosystem for decentralized gaming. Planetarium Labs will also introduce several initiatives such as ecosystem fund and community support programs.
