The scheme gives players loyalty points for participating in various campaigns for the program.

As the company explained in a blog postthese include actions such as playing a game each month, earn specific trophies, or be the first in your region to achieve platinum for a major title.

These points can then be spent in an online catalog on things like certain PlayStation Store items or PSN Wallet credits.

The company also creates a range of digital collectibles for fans.

These are 3D digital models featuring characters from some of PlayStation’s most popular franchises.

In an interview with The Washington PostGrace Chen, vice president of network advertising, wanted to make sure players knew that these collectibles are not NFTs.

“They are certainly not NFTs. Certainly not. You cannot trade or sell them.

“It doesn’t use blockchain technologies and certainly no NFTs.”

Chen also confirmed that before launching the scheme, the company is working to minimize the chances of fraudulent activity.

This includes people selling services to earn trophies on other people’s accounts, or hacking into platinum trophies.

PlayStation hopes for an increase in PlayStation Plus subscriptions with this model.

People who join the service, even at the cheapest Essential tier, earn more loyalty points as part of the program.

The name Stars was chosen because PlayStation wanted to promote the idea that the possibilities are limitless.

It also fits the PlayStation tagline “play has no limits”.

On the reasons for launching the loyalty program, a system similar to My Nintendo Rewards, Chen said:

“We wanted to do that in a way that only PlayStation can.”
