Part of Ferry Rd, near Invercargill, has been closed after a crash.

Police divers have found a woman’s body in a sunken car after a crash near Invercargill.

The car had crashed through a barrier on a bridge over the River Oreti on Ferry Rd, west of Invercargill, Thursday night.

Divers found the body of the woman, who was the driver, in the car around 5 p.m. Friday.

The death has been referred to the coroner.

The accident was reported to emergency services around 11:30 p.m.

Ferry Rd is closed between Staunton Road and Waimatuku Bush Rd and diversions remain.

A neighbor said he woke up at 5 a.m. to see red lights flashing on the bridge, where emergency services were.

“The side of the bridge has been removed,” he said.

The bridge was quite long, he said.

“There are two bollards and they have removed the next 10 and the railings are off.”
