The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has rescued 28 fishmongers kidnapped by suspected sea pirates in the state’s Uruan Local Government Area.
State police commissioner CP Olatoye Durosinmi, who revealed this in a statement signed by commander spokesman SP Odiko MacDon on Friday, July 15, said the victims were rescued through intelligence.
The police chief said the pirates always posed as fishermen to carry out their nefarious activities.
“On Thursday, July 14, at approximately 10:00 PM, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command received a distress call from the Uruan Local Government Area Chairman, Hon. Iniobong Ekpeyong that a market boat carrying fishmongers from the Ishiet market in the community of Adiadia had been attacked and its occupants kidnapped by sea pirates along the Uruan Water Channel,” the statement said.
According to the statement, the CP mobilized tactical teams and the Marines of the commando to go after the mobsters.
“Today, July 15, at about 1:30 p.m., the Akwa Ibom State Marine Police, which had been tracking the mobsters, closed them down after an aggressive search, leaving the evil men at the creeks after robbing them of several sums of money. , two machetes and burned one of their motorboats,”
“The victims were successfully rescued and taken to Akwa Ibom State Police Headquarters and those in need of medical attention were taken to the police clinic for treatment.”
Meanwhile, the CP visited Uwaniba Beach and Ishiet Market in the Adadia Community in Uruan LGA accompanied by the LGA Chairman, where he met community leaders and youth.
He assured them that the police will do everything in their power to protect lives and property in the state.
