Nassau County Police believe a 57-year-old man was bitten by a shark on Thursday while swimming in the ocean off Jones Beach on Long Island.

Shark bites are an extremely unusual occurrence on Long Island, although several shark sightings last year prompted Nassau County officials to temporarily close several beaches and begin patrolling for shark activity.

In response to this weekend event, provincial officials have announced that they will increase the frequency of beach patrols over the upcoming July 4 holiday weekend and continue to patrol the area by boat and helicopter for the rest of the summer.

Officials aren’t 100 percent sure the swimmer’s injury — described as an “injury to” [the] right foot” – was caused by a shark. In general, Wildlife Conservation Society New York Aquarium field scientist Hans Winter said:New York Timesthe threat of shark bites to vacationers on Long Island is “exaggerated”.

Scientists quoted by the Time it’s been postulated that if people see more sharks in the area, it’s because they’re looking for them more now than in the past.

Nassau County has not announced any plans to close beaches at this time.
