Pork industry welcomes expansion | Otago Daily Times Online News

The New Zealand pork industry welcomes an extension of consultations on a draft pig welfare code.

NZPork chief executive Brent Kleiss said the Ministry of Primary Industries had agreed to extend the talks for two weeks until July 8.

“When the consultation started at the end of April, it quickly became clear to us that an eight-week period was not enough time to make informed comments from all industry stakeholders,” said Mr Kleiss.

“The proposed changes are colossal and unprecedented, the material accompanying the draft code is significant and there is a wealth of information for farmers and other industry stakeholders to view and assess.

“Given the survival of individual farmers and the industry’s supply chain is at stake, we are pleased that MPI has agreed to our request.”
