Prince William is in high spirits as he takes part in charity polo match in Windsor

The Duke of Cambridge was in high spirits as he arrived to take part in the Out-Sourcing Inc Royal Charity Polo Cup 2022 at Guards Polo Club in Windsor today – with the Duchess made a surprise appearance to cheer her husband on.

Prince William, 40, has previously played in charity polo matches with his brother Prince Harry, 37, who now lives in his $14.7million home in Santa Barbara with wife Meghan Markle, son Archie, and daughter Lilibet Diana

The pair both competed in the Jerudong Trophy charity polo match together at Cirencester Park Polo Club in 2017.

Today, he was accompanied by his wife Kate Middleton, 40, who donned a £1,352 elegant white midi dress with black pipe detailing from her favourite designer Emilia Wickstead, which she paired with a comfortable pair of £195 flats from designer from Camilla Elphick for the occasion.

The couple were joined on their appearance today by their family dog, two-year-old Orla.

During the outing, the Duchess appeared in high spirits and could be seen affectionately stroking the puppy with one hand, while nursing a glass of Pimms with her other.

The glasses appear to be an essential for the Duchess’ summer outings – with the royal also opting to wear the sunnies to Wimbledon yesterday.

Meanwhile she kept her makeup neutral for the occasion, opting for a sweep of dark eyeliner and a touch of lipstick.

Kate has long been a fan of Emilia Wickstead dresses, and regularly wears the designer for royal outings.

Keeping her look simple, the Duchess opted for minimal jewellery – but added some glitz to her look with a pair of chunky statement earrings.

While the Duchess opted for a summery white midi dress for the outing today, the Duke wore a smart pale blue shirt which he tucked into a pair of white jeans.

Shortly before the match, he changed into a navy blue polo shirt, donning a helmet and elbow pads for the occasion.

Meanwhile Kate appeared relaxed, nursing a glass of Pimms and bending down low to the ground to stroke Orla while they patiently waited for the game to begin.

Adorable Spaniel Orla was a gift to the Cambridges from Kate’s brother James Middleton – and her name means ‘golden princess’

Orla, whose name Celtic in origin and means ‘golden princess’, was bred by the Duchess’s brother James and was given to the family shortly before the death of their Spaniel Lupo in November 2020.

Avid dog lover James, 35, originally bred a litter of puppies from his Spaniel Ella in 2011 – keeping one puppy called Luna and gifting her brother Lupo to Kate in early 2012.

Lupo arrived with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge shortly after their marriage, when Prince William, then an RAF search-and-rescue pilot, was deployed to the Falklands.

Last summer, James bred another litter of six puppies with Luna as their mother while staying with his parents Carole and Michael at their home,

It is understood Kate and William had the pick of the litter, helped by Prince George and Charlotte.

The new puppy is adorable and the whole family are besotted,’ a friend told The Mail on Sunday.

‘They were devastated when Lupo passed away, as any dog owner will understand, but got the new puppy before he died. It was hoped that a younger dog would give Lupo some company and give him a little more life and energy.’

These include Centrepoint, East Anglia Children’s Hospices (EACH), Family Action, Fields in Trust, The Forward Trust, London Air Ambulance, Mountain Rescue England and Wales, and Tusk.

It’s likely the couple’s children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, did not join them at the event because it is still term-time.

The Duke of Cambridge often played polo with his brother, the Duke of Sussex, before Megxit.

Prince Harry and William went head-to-head in the King Power Royal Charity Polo Day, held in honour of late Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha on July 2019.

The brothers were supported by the Duchess of Sussex, who was seen cradling baby Archie, and the Duchess of Cambridge, who brought along royal supporters Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Later on the Duke of Cambridge and his team went on to win the Khun Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Memorial Polo Trophy at the Billingbear Polo Club – holding up the victory cup for a photo.

It comes amid a busy week for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who yesterday made their first visit to Wimbledon of the year.

Kate cut a polished figure in a £1,515 Alessandra Rich frock as she watched two thrilling matches alongside Prince William and Tim Henman – including Norrie’s five-set thriller against Belgium’s David Goffin.

The ninth seed twice recovered from a set down to claim a 3-6 7-5 2-6 6-3 7-5 victory on a raucous No 1 Court and become only the fourth British man in the Open era to reach the last four at the All England Club.

Norrie clinched victory on his second match point, raising his arms aloft when Goffin netted a forehand after three hours and 28 minutes.

Later, the royal couple tweeted a picture of 26-year-old Norrie pumping his fist on the court, with the caption: ‘What a match! Just brilliant @cam-norrie.’

They later added: ‘What a day of tennis! Fantastic to be back @Wimbledon today and wonderful to see @Cam-Norrie flying the flag in the singles!’

And earlier this month, the Duke and Duchess visited  Cambridgeshire. During their final appointment at the County Day, at Newmarket Racecourse, Kate was seen looking delighted as she held a youngster, who was wearing a pink dress.

A video of the sweet moment shows the mother-of-three smiling at and chatting with the baby, who she asked if she could hold, telling her mother: ‘I love babies.’

Meanwhile, Prince William was seen loitering nearby, watching his wife as she cuddled the tot, and Kate was certainly in no hurry to go when he urged her to move on.

The baby’s mother, Marianne Provoost, who had travelled from the Netherlands for the event, said the duchess had asked to hold her child by saying: ‘I love babies.’

Her daughter, four-month-old Norah, was handed back to her, with Ms Provoost telling the duchess: ‘Enjoy your day and enjoy your children.’
