Prisoner who murdered Belmarsh prisoner sentenced to life imprisonment

A

prisoner who killed a fellow prisoner on HMP Belmarsh after clubbing him with a wooden chair leg, was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Stevie Hilden, 31, with no fixed address, was jailed for the murder of 36-year-old Sundeep Singh Ghuman at the jail in south east London in 2020.

He will serve a minimum of 17 years before being eligible for parole, a hearing at Woolwich Crown Court heard Friday.

The court was told that prison officers in a locked cell in HMP Belmarsh had been distorted into a disorder.

The officers entered the cell and found Mr Ghuman with serious injuries.

They fought to save his life, but he died in hospital the next day.

Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command launched a murder investigation.

A postmortem examination revealed that the victim had died from a traumatic head injury caused by a blunt object. He had also sustained extensive bruising on other parts of his body.

It is believed that Hilden used a wooden table leg broken from a table in the cell to perform the brutal attack.

Hilden was arrested and questioned about the incident, but refused to answer questions and did not explain his involvement in the attack to police during the interview.

However, he was charged with murder after detectives gathered overwhelming evidence, including forensics.

Detective Inspector Karen Bangs, the investigating officer, said: “Sundeep suffered a sustained assault that left him seriously injured and eventually killed. My thoughts remain with his family as they continue to process their loss.

“This was a complex investigation in a challenging environment and I would like to thank the prison authorities for their support throughout the process.

“Hilden is a dangerous offender and he will now spend a significant amount of time in a maximum-security prison.”

Sundeep’s mother, Harpal Ghuman, said: “On February 19, 2020, my son was brutally and brutally murdered. When I think of the pain and suffering that Sandeep had to go through, I am very upset.

“Mr Hilden has shown no remorse for his actions. I don’t want anyone else to go through the pain and loss I’ve had. I have listened to all the evidence in court and would like to thank the prison guards, police officers and lawyers for bringing justice to my son.”
