Punchdrunk cuts playtime for The Burnt City due to hot weather

p

not drunk announced it was cutting showtime for The Burnt City performances during the warm weather spell.

The riveting theater company said it “slightly tweaked” the format of its acclaimed show The Burnt City to “make it more comfortable for both the cast and the audience.”

Performances by The Burnt City, which tells the story of the fall of Troy, take place over two Stockroom buildings in Woolwich and can take up to three hours.

Unlike traditional theater shows, the audience at Punchdrunk has no seats and is invited to wander on the elaborate sets as the story unfolds.

However, with temperatures soaring in the capital and highs as high as 35°C for the coming week, producers have decided to bring the show’s end time forward by 30 minutes.

They also said the first half hour of the show will be “more exploratory time in the building” before the performance begins.

This, they said, was to ensure the “safety of the cast and the company.”

A spokesperson told the Standard: “During the extremely hot weather we are currently experiencing, Punchdrunk will slightly resize the performances of The Burnt City to provide greater comfort to both the cast and audience.

“The show, which can last up to three hours depending on what time slot the audience chooses to arrive in, is incredibly physically intense for performers and the safety of the cast and company is always our priority.

“For audiences entering the space within the first thirty minutes, there is more exploration time in the building, providing the opportunity to discover the world of Greece and Troy at their leisure before the performances begin.

“The end of the show is pushed forward for half an hour, after which the audience is invited for a drink in the bar.”
