Putin dealt a bitter blow when he loses Ukraine’s ‘information war’, says spy chief | World | News

GCHQ head Jeremy Fleming exposed Putin’s struggles in a piece he wrote for The Economist, adding that disinformation is a big part of Moscow’s war machine.

He wrote: “So far President Putin has completely lost the information war in Ukraine and in the West.

“While that is cause for celebration, we should not underestimate how Russian disinformation is playing out elsewhere in the world.

“As with the land invasion, Russia’s first online plans seem to have failed.

“The country’s use of offensive cyber tools has been irresponsible and indiscriminate.”

The Kremlin is known to use a similar strategy during conflicts in the Balkans and Syria.

Mr Fleming added that Russia has deployed WhisperGate malware to disrupt and destroy Kiev’s government systems.

He also said Britain’s National Cyber ​​Force could fall back on Moscow with a military unit that uses offensive cyber tools.
