convicted sex trafficker R Kelly reportedly became engaged to one of his alleged victims Joycelyn Savage before being convicted.
The singer was sentenced to 30 years in prison at the end of last month.
Ms Savage, 26, is in a relationship with the singer and moved from her childhood home in Chicago to be with him when she was 17, but her family has accused him of “brainwashing” their daughter.
In a letter to a judge obtained by the TMZ website, Ms Savage revealed that they are engaged and asked for a lenient sentence in his case.
“My name is Joycelyn Savage and I am Robert Kelly’s fiancée,” she wrote on the website.
“I am writing this letter in support of Robert prior to his sentencing so that I can explain to the court that I am not the victim the government has portrayed me to.”
Ms Savage reportedly called their relationship “amazing” and the “best thing that ever happened to me”.
Gerald Griggs, a lawyer for Ms. Savage’s family, told TMZ the engagement was unknown to her family and said relatives “have serious doubts” about the engagement.
However, he added that relatives had been out of contact with Ms. Savage since she left the family home to be with R. Kelly.
Ms Savage has previously defended the singer.
She said: “I’m really tired of all the lies they say about the man we love so much, and our best friend R. Kelly.
“It has been said that I left him and he abused me and all sorts of nonsense. I’ve said before, none of it is true.
“It’s a shame how they are treating him, it’s so wrong on so many levels and he doesn’t deserve this.”
The musician was convicted by a federal jury in New York last September.
A judge ruled that he had “lured young fans into your lane” and used his fame and fortune to “hunt the boy, the vulnerable and the voiceless for his own sexual gratification”.
He was convicted on multiple counts of racketeering, with charges involving bribery and hard labour.
The Standard was unable to reach Kelly or Savage for comment.
