Rāhui in place on the Marlborough River after the body is found

A rāhui is in place at a Marlborough river after a body is found.

On Thursday, a body was discovered by the river at the Pelorus Bridge after a citizen alerted the police at about 10:10 am.

Ngāti Kuia Trust posted on its Facebook page that there was a ban on Te Hoiere Awa, from the Pelorus Bridge to Totara Flat.

“We ask that whānau stay away from this part of the awa for the time being and we will update everyone as soon as we receive any information,” the post read.

David Johnson, general manager of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Kuia, said a elderly had completed a whakawātea (blessing) at the site on Thursday afternoon.

Pelorus Bridge, on State Highway 6, is a popular swimming spot midway between Blenheim and Nelson, and the cafe and campground are popular with tourists and locals alike.
