Waterhaul, a company that makes sunglasses from recycled sea plastic, has launched a new collection with conservation organization SeaTrees.

The special spending line – titled Blue Carbon – will raise funds to help repair endangered Mangrove forests in West Papua, Indonesia.

Every pair of sunglasses sold will plant five mangrove trees in the SeaTrees restoration site in Indonesia; supporting local communities and ecosystems, as well as the Global Blue Carbon Initiative.

Mangrove trees, along with seagrass and other marine habitats, are especially important for the removal of carbon dioxide from the earth’s atmosphere.

These mangrove forests can capture up to 10 times more carbon dioxide per hectare than forests, and 80% of commercial fisheries worldwide are directly or indirectly dependent on mangroves.

The plants also serve as a natural defense against storm surges and rising sea levels – which is why it is so important to protect them.

As for the glasses themselves, they are both stylish and eco-friendly.

Waterhaul’s limited edition sunglasses are made from 100% recycled Cornwall fishing nets, and have a (exclusive to this range) blue and gray colors that represent the Blue Carbon initiative.

They are available in two unisex frame styles; Crantock and Kynance. The Crantock is best for those with medium-sized faces, while the Kynance is slightly smaller.

Lenses are made by Barberini and are polarized with saltwater resistant and scratch resistant components so that they are suitable for coastal adventures.

Each pair of Waterhauls, priced at £ 75, comes with a free sustainable cork triple-protective case included, and the brand will recycle or repair broken to ensure no one ever goes to landfill.

Harry Dennis of Waterhaul said: ‘The Blue Carbon series is a limited edition collection, and once they’re gone, they’re gone.

“Unfortunately, the same goes for mangroves – once destroyed, the entire coastline changes and returning to a mangrove system becomes extremely unlikely – which is why the work that Sea Trees do to prevent habitat loss is so important.”
