Red light runner flies through the air in South Dunedin

A Dunedin man in need of speed was pulled over after driving his car through a red light.

Dunedin Sergeant Anthony Bond said police last night in south Dunedin saw a vehicle overtake several cars, run a red light and fly through the air.

The vehicle was first spotted speeding on Victoria Road at 10:30 p.m. The 26-year-old driver then overtook a taxi and turned onto Prince Albert Road, where he passed a second car at high speed.

Police observed the vehicle run a red light on Macandrew Rd. The driver then turned onto Bradshaw St and ran a red light at the intersection with Hillside Rd.

No police pursuit was initiated due to the dangerous driving.

When the driver ran a red light for the third time on Hillside Road, the vehicle shot through the air and sparks were seen flying from the underside as it landed, Sgt Bond said.

On Burns St. the driver passed a third car, causing another vehicle to swerve to avoid a collision.

A short time later, police encountered the driver driving along Hillhead Rd in Corstorphine and arrested him.

He refused to submit to a breath test and did not want to have his blood drawn, Sergeant Bond said.

The man was arrested and charged with dangerous driving and refusing a blood sample.

He was released on bail and was scheduled to appear in Dunedin District Court on August 23.
