It was warned that the Northern Research Group (NRG), founded by Conservativescould make life difficult for the prime minister after failing to appoint a special cabinet minister for the north.

It comes amid fears Labor could take many Red Wall seats in the next election.

“This summer you signed a pledge to us that you would deliver a cabinet-level minister from the North,” the NRG wrote in a letter sent this month and viewed by The Mail on Sunday.

“We are writing to you today requesting that you keep that promise.”

In his reply, Mr Sunak said he was a Northern MP and pointed to Minister Dehenna Davison’s order to raise the level, despite her not being in cabinet. He added, “I must take this opportunity to congratulate the NRG on the fantastic work you are doing.”

MPs in the NRG are said to have felt ‘betrayed’ by this.

A government spokesman said: ‘We are determined to level up by spreading opportunities and investments. It is the responsibility of every minister to ensure that we reach the national level.’
