The high currents in the Selwyn River overnight, which peaked at Selwyn Huts around 10 a.m. today, were not observed over the stop banks at the Huts, said Selwyn Civil Defense local controller Helene Faass.
Faass said Civil Defense is aware of at least 10 people who were self-evacuated from the Selwyn Huts area yesterday.
They also received reports last night of a small number of homes hit by flooding in Hororata, Kirwee, Sheffield and Darfield, among others.
The total number of affected properties is unknown at this time. Selwybn Civil Defense and County Council officials will follow up on the flood reports today.
Anyone who has had flooding through their home and has not yet contacted the xouncil should call 0800 SELWYN (0800 735 996) so that appropriate support and assessments can be arranged.
Faass said the level of the Selwyn River is falling but remains high and flows quickly in the lower reaches, including at Coes Ford.
Major bridges, including Leeston Bridge and SH1 Bridge, will remain open and untouched.
Much of the surface flooding in the district has abated, but a number of roads have been damaged by floodwaters.
Contractors are working as quickly as possible to make these safe until permanent repairs can be made, Faass said.
Derretts Rd, Homebush Rd and Malvern Hills Rd reopened this morning. Watsons Rd and Washpen Rd remain closed while inspections are underway at Pig Saddle Rd and Scotts Rd (Hororata).
Kowai Rd is passable but has significant damage. Hanmer Rd has fallen down a tree, but it has been cleared.
Snow clearing today on Algidus Rd and Harper Rd
Flood water could remain on local roads and drivers are urged to exercise caution, Faass said.
