Residents of southern Auckland are stuck indoors due to the risk of toxic smoke plumes

Fire and Emergency NZ is asking Auckland residents in Onehunga to stay indoors and keep their windows closed after a fire broke out in an industrial building in Penrose.

The fire produces a potentially toxic smoke eruption, which is carried by the wind in Onehunga, the Mangere Bridge and Fabona.

A fire and an emergency were warned at an industrial building on Neilson Street at 1.55 am on Tuesday.

Over 100 firefighters attended to contain and extinguish the fire.

Brad Mosby, a fire and emergency spokesman, said firefighters were able to control the fire well, but there was an unknown substance inside the building that produced potentially toxic smoke.

“Our firefighters did a really good job of containing the fire that had spread inside the building,” Mosby said.

“The smoke was rising straight in the first place, but now the wind is crossing Onehunga, the Mangere Bridge and Fabona, so I’m asking the residents to close the windows this morning and stay inside if possible.

“We also recommend moving away from the Nielson Street area of Penrose,” he said.
