After successive crops, rice has emerged as a scarce food commodity that was generally cheaper this year than last year. This is good news for the billions of people living across the strip of Asia where grain is a popular staple food, from India to Thailand, Vietnam and Japan. The region, which includes South, Southeast and East Asia, produces and consumes more than 80% of the world’s rice, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
