Rio Ferdinand has given a scathing review of Manchester United‘s approach to recruitment and believe Sir Alex Ferguson would have walked away from a deal for Frenkie de Jong by now.

The Red Devils have needed a massive rebuild this summer after losing a large number of players, but have so far signed only backup left-back Tyrell Malacia, centre-back Lisandro Martinez and free agent Christian Eriksen.

United have spent most of the time trying in vain to get De Jong away from Barcelona – even though he is adamant he wants to stay at the Camp Nou – and is now bottom of the Premier League table after successive defeats.

Ferdinand feels his former club has wasted valuable time and resources in taking over De Jong, leaving them behind, saying Sir Alex – and other top managers – would not have continued to pursue a player who does not want to join. .

Speaking of being FIVE YouTube Channel After United’s 4-0 loss to Brentford, Ferdinand said: ‘We are not in the market for the top players. We go out and we wait three and a half months to sign Frenkie de Jong.

“With all due respect, he’s a great player, but we almost hook up for this player for three months into the transfer window with our caps in hand and begging ‘Please come to us’.”

He continued: “I think Ten Hag is sitting there thinking: “This has been a complete mess for me because I came in expecting to really revamp this first team with about five or six players who I think could change our fortunes.” or give us a better chance to be a better team”.

‘And he’s struggling to get across the line and his main target’ [De Jong], they are not around. They’ve been walking around behind him and begging him, “Turn around and watch us,” and he looks around and says, “Not for me.”

And we’re still here: ‘Please give us one chance’. How do we put ourselves in that position? How do we put ourselves in such a position?

“Do you think Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola or Six Alex Ferguson or Jose Mourinho would follow a player like this? They wouldn’t.

‘Don’t you want to come to us? All right, go away, do your business, good luck to you, move on to the next target. It frustrates the life out of me.’

He focused on United’s recruitment over the past decade and continued: ‘It shows how shocking the recruitment at this football club has been. The recruiting since Sir Alex Ferguson’s time at the club has been an absolute joke.

How many players have come in? 45? 50? Whatever it is, have players grown in value? I would say no. Normally you would fall on two or three random diamonds falling out of the number of transfers we did. We didn’t even have that.

‘How could it go so wrong? And a lot of money has been spent on players, obviously not the right ones, and the bottom line is that the people who pick players and once the players are in the building don’t get better as players. It’s been an absolute mess.’
