Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez has sent a warning to Liverpool and Chelsea about the title race in the Premier League for the new season 2022-23.
Mahrez registered 11 goals and five assists in 28 Premier League games last season, while City won the title for the fourth time in the last five top campaigns.
Liverpool are the only team to break City’s dominance in recent years by winning the 2019-20 Premier League title, while Chelsea last won in 2016-17.
Pep Guardiola has chopped and changed his team for the new season, bringing in a £51.1m striker Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund and signing England midfielder Kalvin Phillips from Leeds for £50 million.
Some high-profile players have left the Etihad Stadium this summer, Raheem Sterling joins Chelsea and Gabriel Jesus goes to Arsenal, both for £45million each.
Mahrez, who won his first Premier League title with Leicester City in 2014-15 and now has four in total to his name, thinks City will once again top the table.
“We really really want to win again,” the 31-year-old Algeria international, who has scored 63 goals in 189 appearances for City since arriving in 2018, told the Daily mail.
“When the season starts, we want to go back. That’s the big motivation. We never think, “Oh, it’s going to be easy this year,” or we can take it easy.
“No, we’re going 100 percent from the start because we want to win and we were built with this mentality.
‘On the last day [of last season], to Aston Villa, I just thought, damn what are we doing here? We play at home and lose 2-0 to Villa.
“Sometimes you don’t feel good in a game, I don’t that day, and a few other people came in and helped us win – that’s what our team is all about.”
City will face Liverpool in the Community Shield on Saturday, as the Premier League and FA Cup winners go head-to-head for the first piece of silverware for 2022-23.
