As revealed in January, the Duke of Sussex is pursuing legal action against the Home Office over its decision not to allow him to pay for police protection for himself and his family while in the UK. Prince HarryThe firm’s attorneys are expected to ask Justice Swift for permission for a full judicial review of the decision regarding his safety.
If today’s application is granted, the Duke will be allowed to plead his case in the Supreme Court.
Prince Harry lost taxpayer-funded police protection after he and Meghan Markle stepped down as full-time working royals in March 2020.
A statement released by the Duke’s office in January claimed that Harry had offered to pay personally for the police protection needed for himself and his family in January 2020, but the offer was “rejected”.
The Duke, whose statement claimed his security personnel in the US cannot provide the same level of protection as he is in the UK because they cannot carry weapons on UK soil, aims to “protect himself and his family while he’s in the UK so his kids can get to know his home country.”
At a preliminary hearing in March, in which the judge ruled that parts of the court documents in the case should remain private, Home Office Robert Palmer, QC, said in written comments that Harry’s offer to privately fund police protection was “irrelevant.” and that personal protective equipment cannot be rented by the police.
The hearing begins at 10:30 a.m.
