Peacock will not return to Rutherford Falls.
NBCUniversal-backed streaming service has canceled showrunner’s comedy series Sierra Teller Ornelas and starring Ed Helms after a two-season run.
Created by Ornelas, Helms and Mike Schuur (the right place), Rutherford Falls marked a breakthrough series for Native representation on screen and in the writer’s room.
The cancellation comes nearly three months after Peacock dropped all eight episodes of the show’s second season. While Peacock doesn’t release traditional ratings, season two of the comedy starring Helms, Jana Schmieding and Michael Greyeyes has a rare 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. (Season one is also certified fresh with a 92 percent rating.)
Despite its status as a critical and representational breakthrough, sources say Peacock was unenthusiastic about renewing the show after the first season due to a lack of viewers. Those same sources noted that producers offered and paid Universal Television—Peacock’s studio brother—all the expenses of season two because it believed in the show and valued its relationship with Schur. It’s also worth pointing out that the second season had two fewer episodes than the freshman.
“It was a real pleasure to watch these two seasons of Rutherford FallsOrnelas said in a statement sent to: THR. “Mike Schur, Ed Helms and I wanted to create something new, real and clever – but also stupid – that made you cry and think, but also laugh when Reagan was kicked in the face or Nathan was put in a coffin.” Before our show – to borrow a line from Terry Thomas, played by the ridiculously talented Michael Greyeyes – “Indigenous Representation [was], for the most part, a hate crime.’ Therefore, it was an honor to introduce the best of the Indian country to the masses. We continue to be blown away by the critical response, scoring 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes in our second season, and while we’re sad that our time with Peacock is coming to an end, we’re extremely grateful to them for picking us up and showcasing the talents. have shown. from comedy legend Ed Helms and breakthrough stars like Jana Schmieding, Jesse Leigh, Dana Wilson, Dallas Goldtooth, Kaniehtiio Horn and many others. We love these characters, the world we’ve created and the impact it’s had, and we’ll explore other platforms where, hopefully, the people of Rutherford Falls can call them home.”
Schur has a long relationship with Universal Television and has settled in the studio under a rich blanket deal after working on The office, and made Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and the right place. The Rutherford Falls cancellation marks the second major blow to Schur in recent months and comes after Peacock chose to scrap the baseball superfan TV adaptation of Kevin Costner’s lover Field of dreams. That show had received a direct order and was getting ready to shoot in Iowa. Schur, meanwhile, continues to produce HBO’s Emmy award-winning comedy Max hacking and Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) comedy first.
As for Ornelas, the showrunner expanded her overall deal with Universal Television last year and most recently co-exec producer on Apple’s Maya Rudolph comedy. loot. That series was recently picked up for a second season.
