TL;DR

  • A YouTuber has put the Galaxy Z Flip 3 to a marathon folding test.
  • The collapsible was also subject to dirt, sand and water.
  • The Flip 3 reached over 418,500 folds before giving up.

Samsung say the Galaxy Z Flip 3 can accommodate up to 200,000 folds, which equates to five years of use if you fold and unfold the device 100 times a day.

However, Polish YouTuber Mrkeybrd streamed live a folding test from June 8-13 (u/t: Business news from Maeil), putting the Galaxy Z Flip 3 to the test. The test also saw the YouTuber cover the foldable in dirt and sand and submerge it in water. So what was the result?

It turns out that the Samsung device reached just over 418,500 folds and unfolded before refusing to stay closed or fully open. The YouTuber also dropped the phone more than a dozen times at the end of the folding test. You can watch the ending below.

It’s quite a remarkable achievement and suggests that Samsung may have underestimated the durability of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. However, it’s also worth noting that the hinge started to get unreliable at about 352,000 folds, as it didn’t always close properly. Nevertheless, this point still goes well beyond Samsung’s estimated fold count and came after the introduction of sand and other dirt.

This isn’t exactly a scientific folding test given the aforementioned dirt and sand. But it still has to give Galaxy Z Flip 3 owners a kind of reassurance that their foldable is a durable device. If you have any problems with folding, you can consult our guide at Z Flip 3 Troubleshooting.
