Sarina Wiegman tells England to forget history against Germany and prove they are the best

There will be 90,000 fans at Wembley – a record for a European international match between two women’s teams – and a live television audience that could peak at 15 million people.

She added: “Of course Germany also wants to win the final, but we are not talking about the rivalry between England and Germany. We are so eager to show how good we are and play our best game.

“There is so much eagerness in this team to win. And so much resilience. We are so eager to show that we are the best, play our best game.

“That’s what we try to do all the time. And then, hopefully, that will lead us to win. That’s basically where we are. Moreover, we talk about players, but not history. It’s the here and now.”

Wiegman already won the European Championship with the Netherlands in 2017 and took them to a World Cup final two years later and has proven her elite coaching credentials by also bringing England to a final after less than a year on the job.

Encouragingly, she sees a winning mentality among the England players that impressed her from the moment she took charge of training last October.

“I think they’ve already been mentally strong,” she explained. “I think they really believe now that we can beat anyone if we do some things really well. We’ve already shown it, we’ve already proven to ourselves that we can do it [against Spain and Sweden].
