Should Rachel Reeves reinstate Winter Fuel Payment immediately? Vote now | Politics | News

Winter fuel payments are a crucial benefit provided to everyone state pension age in the UK but younger Work this will change.

While many rely on the payout to make their heating bills From this year onwards, in the coldest months, only state pensioners who receive an income-related benefit will be eligible.

This means that an estimated 10 million people will not experience this.

The announced cuts will save around £1.4 billion, but have been heavily criticised by MPs and charities.

Among those speaking out against the cuts are: Dame Priti Patel, who criticised the decision as “disgraceful and cruel”.

A AgeUK petition calling on Labour to reverse planned cuts has now collected more than 325,000 signatures.

The petition reads: “The abolition of the Winter fuel payment this winter, with virtually no notice and no compensatory measures to protect poor and vulnerable pensioners, is the wrong policy decision.

“Millions of struggling pensioners are not getting the £300 they need to pay their bills.”

A government spokesman said the decision was due to “the serious state of public finances”, meaning “this government has to take difficult decisions to restore the foundations of the economy”.

Further measures will be outlined in the Finance Minister's autumn budget on Wednesday 30 October.
