At least one passenger has been killed and 20 others injured on board a horror flight from London Heathrow.
Chaos ensued on Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 when turbulence caused the flight to descend “20,000 feet” before diverting to Bangkok, Thailand.
The Boeing 777-300ER took off from Heathrow on Monday at 10:38 p.m. About an hour and 30 minutes from SIN Airport, the crew declared a state of emergency.
The plane, named 9V-SWM, then landed at Suvarnabhumi International Airport, where it made an emergency landing around 4pm local time.
Upon landing, the aircraft was attended to by waiting ambulances to treat the passengers. The plane was originally scheduled to land at Singapore's Changi Airport around 6:10 p.m.
In Bangkok, photos and videos from local media show more than ten ambulances at the scene, with emergency services and airport staff nearby.
In a statement on Facebook, Singapore Airlines confirmed both that the plane had been diverted and that one of the passengers had died.
They said: “Singapore Airlines Flight #SQ321, flying from London (Heathrow) to Singapore on 20 May 2024, experienced severe turbulence en route. The plane diverted to Bangkok and landed on May 21, 2024 at 3:45 PM local time.
“We can confirm that there have been injuries and one death on board the Boeing 777-300ER. There were a total of 211 passengers and 18 crew members on board.”
They added: “Singapore Airlines extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. Our priority is to provide all possible assistance to all passengers and crew on board the aircraft.
“We are working with local authorities in Thailand to provide necessary medical assistance and are deploying a team to Bangkok to provide any additional assistance.”
