Slip closes SH58, motorists told to use alternative routes

Motorists have been told to expect delays after another slip that has closed State Highway 58, between the Haywards Hill Interchange and Pāuatahanui.

Contractors have been notified of the slip, but SH58 is likely to remain closed for some time.

Motorists are advised by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to postpone their journey or use an alternative route.

Authorities in the wider Wellington area have spent the past few days tending to over 100 slips or slumps leading to closure of several major roads and made some houses totter on the brink after a torrent of heavy rain.

Despite a short break in the weather, about 100 slip or collapse were on the Wellington City Council to-do list as of Thursday.

The Seatoun Tunnel reopened to traffic on Wednesday after contractors removed a large pine tree that had fallen at the entrance on Tuesday, while Porirua City Council contractors cleared a large fallen tree that brought down power lines and closed Paekākāriki Hill Rd in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Both lanes south of Stokes Valley along Eastern Hutt Rd remained closed Thursday due to lingering risk of the large slip that undermined properties on Holborn Drive on July 22. A northbound lane had been converted for southbound travel.
