Smith-Farrell axis does not work

Smith-Farrell axis does not work

England suffered a defeat in the first Test against Australia despite playing for 14 men for most of the match.

Telegraph Sport carries the rule across both sides to the series opener.

England

fifteen. Freddie steward

Air skills used with good effect in attack to chase high balls. Sturdy as always at the back. Can get more involved in phase play. 7

14. Jack Nowell

Looked dangerous as he worked off his wing and pulled down one run that left three defenders in his wake. Start looking back at his best. 7

13.Joe Marchant

On wing as well as center use, Marchant was nimble on offense and strong on defense. Need to claim the ball more often. 7

12. Owen Farrell

Combination with Smith looked promising early on, but clearly needs to be honed further. The midfield was often too flat, which made it far too easy to defend. 5

11. Joe Cokanasiga

Cokanasiga, who was selected to add strength to the backline, knocked off Australian captain Hooper early but was very quiet for the rest. Not involved enough in Nowell roaming instead. 5

10.Marcus Smith

Found space at the back with Farrell being used regularly at the first receiver. Lose some opportunities to exploit opportunities. England needed more. 5

9. DannyCare

After four years away from international rugby, Care put on a composite but uninspiring performance. Didn’t add the spark that Eddie Jones would have wanted. 6

Ellis Genge

The ball is spotted on the back of the loose ground. Busy as usual, pumping his legs to earn the hard meter. Penalized on one occasion at scrum time. 7

2. Jamie George

Fairly quiet display in the loose, but his throw-in at the lineout was accurate and made England’s loose ground function. 6

3.Will Stuart

Kyle Sinckler’s absence gave Stuart a chance to start. Won a penalty kick at scrum time and strong in the loose. Promising achievement. 8

Maro Itoje

Agreed because he shouted at the lineout, which strengthened his reputation as rugby’s biggest nuisance. Uncharacteristically quiet and honestly slightly tired at the same time. 5

5. Johnny Hill

Yellow card to pull Swain’s hair. Happy not to be punished for a push in the face of Swain before that. Reckless and immature performance. 4
