american football legend Sol Campbell has been forced to take legal action after claiming someone rent from his eight bedrooms Chelsea mansion couldn’t pay the rent.
The former English star is said to have rented out the ‘beautiful’ six-storey property overlooking the Thames to the south west London through a broker.
But the centre-back says he had to go to court for an eviction notice when the tenant failed to pay the rent. Daily mail reports.
The tenant, who claimed to have sold his insurance business for £1bn, signed a two-year contract through the estate agency Savills.
But after paying a deposit and three months’ rent, they reportedly stopped paying Sol, leaving the former Southend United manager out of the game for £1.5million.
Sol is said to have hired a private investigator to find out more about the tenant who in turn discovered their name in the Panama Papers, which disclosed the financial data of the world’s richest.
“The tenant has done a lot to get himself off the internet, but he was mentioned in the Panama Papers,” Sol told the newspaper.
“Apparently he is getting a divorce, he pays two or three staff members, he pays school fees. He pays everyone – except me.’
Sol has now issued an eviction notice that will take effect later this month.
He also has put the mansion on the market for £22 million†
A Savills spokesperson said references and credit checks were being conducted, adding: “The decision to proceed with a lease rests solely with the owner of the property.”
Sol’s stellar career began in 1992 with Tottenham Hotspur, where he played 315 games and helped the club win the 1999 League Cup.
In 2001, he made the controversial move to North London club Arsenal when he amassed nearly 200 appearances before leaving in 2006.
