Son of All White’s great Vaughan Coveny takes first step to Australian football selection

Vaughan Coveny was once the All Whites record scorer, but his teenage son Luka could soon be playing football for Australia.

Luka Coveny has been selected in a 34-man squad to try out for the Joeys – Australia’s national under-17 boys’ football team.

The squad will train at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra under the guidance of the staff of Football Australia’s National Teams, which include former England Football League players Trevor Morgan and Tony Vidmar.

Next week, a final roster of 23 players will be selected to represent Australia at the Asian Football Association’s Under-16 Youth Championships in Indonesia.

The Joeys aim to qualify for the FIFA Under-17 Boys World Cup in Peru in 2023.

Wellington-born Vaughan Coveny scored 29 goals in 64 international matches between 1992 and 2006.

He was the All Whites record scorer until English Premier League star Chris Wood surpassed his goal against Fiji last March.

Coveny Sr, 50, has lived in Australia since 1993 and had a long and successful career in the National Soccer League with South Melbourne before playing in the A-League with Newcastle Jets and Wellington Phoenix until 2009.

He is now the under-21 team coach at A-League champion Western United.

Luka played his junior football for Essendon United and is now a defender in the Melbourne Victory academy.
