Saxton McGee, 29, smashed the windshield of his mother’s vehicle after she refused to give him money.

A Marlborough man who smashed his mother’s car window after she refused to give him money was found with improvised weapons and drug utensils when police were called.

Saxton McGee, 29, was staying in a caravan at his mother’s address in Blenheim, according to a police fact sheet.

On October 21, McGee and his mother got into an argument after he demanded money from her.

After his mother said she had no money to give him, McGee went outside and smashed the windshield of her vehicle with a piece of wood.

Police were called and searched McGee’s caravan after smelling cannabis. They found cannabis-related utensils along with a number of makeshift weapons, including a piece of steel pipe with a rope wrapped around one end, a homemade saw, brass knuckles, and a broom handle with a blade on one end.

McGee was sentenced by Blenheim District Court on Wednesday to 100 hours of community service and nine months of supervision.

McGee was sentenced by Blenheim District Court on Wednesday to 100 hours of community service and nine months of supervision.

In explanation, McGee said the vehicle was his, as his mother had given it to him. He said the steel pipe was for self-defense, and the spear was used for eels, but did not explain the other weapons.

At Blenheim court sentencing McGee on Wednesday, his lawyer Joshua Smith said the summary of the facts was accepted and that his client’s underlying mental health issues “played a role”.

“That, combined with drugs, is not a good mix,” Smith said.

“He accepts that things are getting out of hand that day, and he wasn’t thinking straight”.

McGee was close to his mother and wanted things resolved so he could continue his relationship with his seven children, Smith said.

On all charges, McGee was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and nine months of supervision.

The judge ordered the destruction of the guns and drug-related paraphernalia and ordered McGee to pay $500 in damages to his mother.
