Four-day-old baby boy died after falling asleep next to his mother sleeping on a couch after she couldn’t go up to bed and ‘had no mobility support after her cesarean section’, inquest hears
- Emma James gave birth to her son Jory via Caesarean section in June 2020
- She had serious mobility problems and was forced to sleep on a couch
- She fell asleep during the four-day feeding in the early morning hours
A four-day-old baby boy died after falling asleep on a couch next to his mother.
Jory James’ mother Emma was in so much pain from the cesarean section that she was unable to go upstairs to the bedrooms at her home in St Ives, Cornwall.
An inquest into Jory’s death in June 2020 learned today that Ms James, a single mother, received no help after she was released from hospital.
Cornwall’s senior coroner Andrew Cox heard it’s possible Jory may have suffocated or overheated when Emma found a blanket over his head when she woke up.

Mrs James, from St Ives, Cornwall, pictured claimed her son’s death was avoidable as she did not receive help with her mobility after being sent home after her cesarean section
Truro’s investigation revealed that Mrs. James had slept on a couch with Jory in a Moses basket on the floor.
But she fed him between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. before propped up her baby next to her with pillows.
The inquiry heard that Mrs. James fell asleep and when she awoke, she found her son limp and not breathing.
A post mortem in the child could not establish a cause of death.
Ms James told the inquest her son’s death was avoidable because she was not offered help with mobility at home despite being in pain from the C-section.
Mr. Cox makes an open conclusion.
