A Dunedin resident reportedly shot his ceiling, sparking a nearly two-hour standoff with the armed offenders.

Dunedin Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond said police and Armed Offenders (AOS) were called to Dean Bay Rd, Sawyers Bay at 8.20pm last night after the landlord of a property called police about their tenant having firearms in the property had.

Residents of the property were concerned about one of the residents of the property, a 33-year-old man, and his behavior throughout the afternoon.

The man fired a shotgun, shooting through the ceiling and possibly once outside, Sergeant General Bond said.

Police and AOS went to the building and convinced the man to surrender around 10 p.m.

He was arrested and the firearm was located and discharged.

The man was charged with discharging a firearm in or near a home, intentionally causing damage, threatening to kill, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
