to fade bassist Alex James havoc wrought in the Sunday brunch kitchen after he cut off a “large piece” of his finger, with some viewers begging the show bosses to take him off the air.

the musician, who traded concerts for cheese making?previously appeared on the morning show, joining hosts Simon Rimmer and Tim Lovejoy.

Alex was baking beignets when he said to Simon, “I cut my finger.”

The 59-year-old presenter replied: ‘Uh oh, yes you have.’

A concerned Tim then rushed onto the set with a bandage, while Alex, who organizes festival The Great Partycontinued with his recipe.

Alex later revealed that he “took a big chunk out of my finger,” with the producers having no choice but to take him off the set twice so he could get a band-aid.

The wound must have been pretty nasty, because at one point Simon swerved to Alex’s side to avoid the “little bit of blood” on his cutting board.

Audience members took to Twitter to share their shock at the incident, with one user calling the scenes “total car crash TV.”

One viewer said: ‘Alex James insists on getting his cut hand covered in blood all over the food he’s preparing, and Simon Rimmer is subtly running around to stop him. Total car accident TV. And now Rimmer really eats the fried what-it-was James just got his hands on #sundaybrunch.”

Another joked, “Alex James made his own ketchup.”

One joked similarly: ‘Alex James does finger food in his cooking spot on today’s show…’

Another said: ‘Alex James who cut his finger causing absolute havoc on #sundaybrunch really made the show live.’

However, some fans stood behind Alex (or should that be finger?) and praised him for staying calm as his finger spurted blood.

“This was great live TV. All INTERESTING characters and things that go wrong in the kitchen (like real life). Well done #alexjames for keeping calm. #SundayBrunch,” one viewer wrote in support.
