Super Mario sounds exactly like Chris Pratt – and that’s fine

When Chris Pratt teased his upcoming role as gaming’s most iconic character, Mario, he called it “unlike anything you’ve heard before in the Mario world.” Charles Martinet, who has voiced both Mario and Luigi since 1992, would clearly not be a source of inspiration.

Fans have been wondering for months how Pratt — elevated from goofy Parks and Rec roles to superhero status with films like Guardians of the Galaxy — would tackle the Italian-accented plumber. After Nintendo released the first trailer for the movie today, the answer is…as Chris Pratt.

“What is this place?” Pratt Mario – who in his tone could refer to anything from a dinosaur park to the most godforsaken bathroom at a concert – wonders aloud as he explores a mushroom-filled field. Shortly afterwards we have hear him explain “Mushroom Kingdom, here we come!” into what can be? factual Mario accent – sort of a parody of your local Brooklyninte screaming to walk.

Mario’s voice reveal was undeniably the reason to tune into today’s trailer. Nintendo’s hyped fans since the news that, in addition to Jack Black as Boswer, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Pratt would be casting characters most of us have known since childhood. “I worked very closely with the directors and tried a few things and came up with something that I’m really proud of and I can’t wait for people to see and hear it,” Pratt told Variety. Again… it’s just Chris Pratt, an ordinary man, in a movie where everyone else has at least a little whimsy in their voices.

This week, fans have already mourned the loss of Mario’s assbut listen to me: the sheer aburity, the absolute troll of this revelation, is the funniest best result. Mario van Pratt yelling “Mama Mia” in an early ’90s Italian accent might not be quite as charming after an hour and a half in surround sound.

Good and bad news here: Black as Bowser’s first lines sound suitably grindy and menacing for the Koopa king. But if Pratt is any indication of how the Mario Bros. might sound like, then get ready for Luigi’s Charlie Day-voiced screamer to come as we saw the end of the trailer.
