English cyclist Joe Truman had a horror crash that left him unconscious in the men’s keirin at the commonwealth games.
Truman had been in the back of the field when Australian Matt Glaetzer crashed and the 25-year-old was unable to avoid him, hitting him at nearly 70 km/h.
He was immediately knocked out when he landed face to face on the track and suffered a suspected broken collarbone.
There was an anxious wait as he was treated by trackside medical personnel before sitting down and being whisked away in a wheelchair with an oxygen mask over his face.
It created a tranquil environment on the London Velodrome, which will be used to host track cycling for Birmingham 2022. And when he was driven off the track, he received a standing ovation from the packed 3,000-strong crowd.
After the incident, BBC pundit Sir Chris Hoy said: “You race as close as possible to the riders around you. Matt Glaetzer got a box and went after Jack Carlin and felt on the right side, and Joe Truman had nowhere to go.
“Your heart rate is at its maximum and the adrenaline is flowing. It is rare that you have such a serious accident on the velodrome as during a road race when you are training.
“It’s just one of those things that you deal with and it reminds us how tough these guys are and how brave you have to be.”
