Teen killer, 18, gets life after hacking victim to death with huge ‘Rambo knife’

A teenage killer caught shuddering at CCTV footage chasing a 17-year-old boy with a ‘Rambo knife’ before chopping him to death in the street has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Cam-Ron Dunn, 18, stabbed Derlano Samuels twice with the knife before chasing him into a store where he had tried to flee.

A court heard that Dunn then stabbed the teen several times with a knife before fleeing on the bike, leaving his victim in a pool of blood.

Derlano died of a stab wound to his chest after the attack in Waterloo Road, Cape Hill, Smethwick, West Midlands, on 1 May last year.

An autopsy also revealed he had multiple stab wounds to his body, including one where the knife tip lodged in his skull.

Dunn, from Smethwick, denied murder but it took the jury just 90 minutes to reach a unanimous guilty verdict after a trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

Today Dunn was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years.

Derlano’s family released a statement after the case to speak out about their heartbreak and called for an end to knife crime in Britain.

They said: ‘Derlano was a happy, positive, thoughtful and kind-hearted person. His life was taken from him before his 18th birthday in a senseless act at the hands of someone else.

He will be forever missed by his family and those who knew and loved him.

‘The youth of today think that carrying knives will protect them, but in fact you are putting your life in the hands of the law.

‘Knife crime is a pandemic in the UK, its impact is rippling through families and communities and cannot be underestimated.’

West Midlands Police have previously released footage of Dunn lunging for Derlano before chasing him to his death.

CCTV footage shows Derlano running away after being stabbed twice before taking refuge in a Polish supermarket.

Dunn is seen running towards him before delivering the fatal blows and escaping on foot as he appears to be checking his hands for blood.

He then rushes into another shop where he hid the knife in his pants and did his hair before calmly grabbing his bike and riding home.

Moments after the brutal attack, Derlano managed to scramble into the Ford that had driven away earlier, after an altercation with Dunn.

Minutes later, the car was found, crashed a mile down Heath Street, Winson Green, Birmingham.

Police and paramedics quickly arrived and found Derlano who was rushed to hospital but died a short time later.

After viewing the CCTV taken from the store, a police officer recognized the killer as Dunn.

He was arrested at his home at 1:20 a.m. on May 2, and officers found a freshly laundered tracksuit Dunn had been wearing on the day of the murder.

Officers also found a stab-resistant vest and knife scabbard in the downstairs toilet, along with two machetes hidden in a barbecue grill and one under the living room couch.

Detective Inspector Hannah Whitehouse said: “The brutality of this attack was simply appalling and as a result, yet another family has been left in mourning for a beloved teenager.

Derlano was stabbed in the street and then clearly tried to flee from his attacker.

What caused this horrific violence is not clear, but it has resulted in another family losing a loved one, and our thoughts remain with them.

“Our thoughts are with them and we hope this prison sentence can provide them with some comfort.

“But this tragic murder is yet another reminder of the dangers of carrying knives and the horrific impact it can have.

“Two families have rewritten their futures – one is now left forever without a loved one, and a second faces the reality of their teen spending years behind bars.”
