This phone booth was destroyed when a car ran into it early Sunday morning.

Superman may struggle to change anywhere if he visits Central New Plymouth the next day or two after a car crashed into a payphone early on Sunday and wrecked it.

A woman, who did not give her name, said she was on her way home from work around 1:30 am and passed a badly damaged silver ‘people mover’ vehicle that had just crashed into a pay phone at the intersection of Devon and Liardet Streets .

“They must have gone right through the lights and turned off the phone booth.”

The booth was in pieces on the sidewalk and the police were on the scene, she said.

A police spokesman said emergency services were called to the intersection around 1am and found a car collided with a pay phone.

There were no injuries and officers had the vehicle towed and the road cleared.

No further details were available.
