Never climbed was more popular. Whether you discover nearby outdoor climbing on Mountain Project or google local indoor climbing gyms, you probably have a climbing spot near your home, no matter where you live. Most climbers are familiar with the safety routines, lingo and equipment when climbing indoors. But it’s good to start outdoors if you drop in with the right climbers or sign up for an American Mountain Guides Association-accredited course.
Whether you are indoors or outdoors, you are going to need essential equipment. I keep it simple (and affordable) in this guide because it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the jargon for technical equipment. You are also not going to be a climbing lead until you are more experienced, so I have omitted items like rope and quickdraws, which your climbing leader will have. You can get by with any flexible clothing (no jeans!), But I suggest you move to technical synthetic layers to climb outside.
