The chaos of the railway strike continues as TWO more days of action have been announced on August 18 and 20 | UK | News

The RMT union said workers will go on strike on August 18 and 20. It comes after thousands of train operators and Network Rail staff ran away in a national strike in June.

The union had announced a strike on July 27, the day before the Commonwealth Games start in Birmingham.

RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said: “The rail industry and the government need to understand that this dispute is not going to just go away.

“They should be serious about providing a wage offer that helps address the crisis in the cost of living, job security for our members and good working conditions.

“Recent proposals from Network Rail fall short on pay and safety around maintenance work.”

Mr Lynch added: “And the train companies have not even made us an offer of wages in recent negotiations.

“Now Grant Shapps [Transport Secretary] Having given up his hopeless hopes of Prime Minister’s job, he can now go back to his day job and help solve this mess.

“We remain open to discussions, but we will continue our campaign until we reach a negotiated settlement.”

Andrew Haines, Chief Executive of Network Rail, said: “By announcing even more strike dates, the RMT has dropped any pretense that this is about reaching a deal.

“It is clear that the interests of the passengers and our staff are secondary to the political campaign of the union bosses.”
