The European Union has discussed for the first time whether to impose sanctions on Israel unless it halts its military operations in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, Ireland's foreign minister said.
“For the first time, I have seen a significant discussion about sanctions and 'what ifs' at an EU meeting in real life,” Micheál Martin told Politico.
He added that there is “some distance between people articulating the need for a sanctions-based approach if Israel does not comply with the International Court of Justice ruling … to agreement in the Council meeting, given all the different perspectives there.”
Last week, the International Court of Justice issued interim orders calling on Israel to halt its military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
The report comes a day after Israel admitted a “tragic mistake” after a military attack on two Hamas officials sparked a fire that killed at least 45 civilians.
