The producer of The Handmaid’s Tale says the TV series has become “frighteningly relevant” after the controversial Roe vs. wade.
On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court ended abortion protections that have been in place for nearly 50 years by deciding to overturn the landmark Roe v Wade ruling.
This is expected to lead to abortion bans in about half of the US states.
Judith Orr, vice chair of the Abortion Rights campaign group, which claims to have organized the demonstration, said protesters were “full of anger and rage” at the decision and warned the impact would be “barely.”
The critically acclaimed series – a dystopian drama based on the novel written by Margaret Atwood – examines a society ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property.
Executive producer Warren Littlefield shared his thoughts on the relevance of the heartbreaking upheaval to the dystopian novel.
“We’ve often said in recent years that we’d like to be less relevant,” he said.
But unfortunately, the show is terrifyingly relevant. And today that seems even more so,” he added to Deadline.
Americans and people around the world have reacted shocked and outraged at the news, including Viola Davis, former First Lady Michelle Obama and Taylor Swift.
Singer Harry Styles shared former First Lady Michelle Obama’s lengthy statement, before writing in his own message: “I am absolutely devastated for the people of America today. Check your friends. Take care of each other. We’re all in this together, and the fight has just begun. A really dark day for America.”
Now that Roe has been overthrown, individual states are responsible for determining how they will regulate abortions.
Thirteen states have enacted so-called trigger laws that will take effect immediately once Roe lifts that ban or severely restricts access to abortion, and half a dozen more states have near-complete bans on terminating a pregnancy after six weeks, which is often before many. people know they are pregnant.
The Handmaid’s Tale airs on Channel 4 and can be streamed in full on All 4.
